The full-size Alphard Hybrid MPV qualifies as an Ultra-Low Emissions Vehicle (ULEV), achieving levels 75% lower emissions than the Japanese government's 2000 benchmark. The 2.4-litre gasoline engine has been developed specifically for use in Toyota's hybrid systems and features a high-expansion ratio cycle that raises efficiency and reduces friction.

In 2006, a Royal Lounge Alphard was introduced. It is a luxurious, four-seat version of the Alphard. Its traditional competitor from Nissan is the Elgrand.

The Alphard Hybrid uses "by-wire" technology that monitors brake pedal pressure and vehicle speed in order to calculate the optimum hydraulic pressure. By-wire works with the E-Four to maximize the collection of kinetic energy from braking for conversion into electric power.

The Alphard Hybrid Minivan can generate up to 1,500 watts and is equipped with standard 100-volt AC power outlets, allowing a wide range of appliances to be used, such as laptops and emergency lights. The electrical outlets can also be used to recharge items such as power-assisted bicycles and electric carts, adding a new dimension to leisure activities.

The Alphard Hybrid also offers some advanced safety features not seen on other hybrids. In fact, standard on the "G edition" and optional on standard grades are ( with a G-BOOK compatible DVD voice navigation system):

* Blind Corner Monitor, which indicates the approach of other vehicles or pedestrians from the left and right
* Back Guide Monitor with a color CCD camera and voice-guidance function, which uses signals from a steering sensor to calculate the likely reverse path during reversing and display it on the monitor screen
* Lane-monitoring system that uses images from the Back Guide Monitor camera to measure the lateral distance to white or yellow lines on major highways and triggers an alarm when the distance falls below a pre-set level
* Radar Cruise Control, which uses laser radar sensors and steering sensors to keep track of the vehicle's lane and any preceding vehicle and ensures that a safe distance is maintained in accordance with vehicle speed.

Space Race Wins By Toyota Verso-S

Toyota Ireland has launched its new small MPV in Ireland with an entry level price of €16,995.

The Verso-S is the successor to the Yaris Verso, which has not been sold in Europe since 2005.

In total there are 925 old Yaris Versos on Irish roads, including more than 500 that qualify for the current Government car scrappage scheme. The B-Segment MPV market currently accounts for 1.7 per cent of overall Irish car sales, with the Hyundai iX20 being the market leader for the year to date.

To avoid any confusion, the new Verso-S should be distinguished from the bigger Corolla-derived Verso. It is a smaller brother and is based on a new platform developed for a new Yaris hatchback due here in 2012.

The new Verso-S is powered by the familiar (also in the Auris and Corolla) 1.33 petrol engine which is in the B CO2 tax bracket here in manual gearbox form, while a CVT automatic variant puts it in Band A, but carries a premium of €1,200.

The 1.4 diesel option is not available in right hand drive and the stop/start will not be available here because it does not change the tax rating.

When it comes to size, Toyota says the new Verso-S is the smallest of the market’s mini-MPVs on the outside, but clever design and packaging ensures the space on offer inside is close to what you will find in a compact family hatchback. And while the generous and flexible loadspace makes it very practical, it is smart looking too.

The rear seats are divided 60:40 and have a simple one-touch flat-fold mechanism. Verso-S makes life even easier by providing additional control levers to fold the seats down on each side of the boot space – a feature not found on any of its mini-MPV rivals.

Around the cabin there are 19 separate storage points, including door pockets, bottle and cupholders, a tray beneath the front passenger seat, and a three-level dashboard compartment.

In Ireland it is being offered in three grades, Terra, Luna and Sol. The last includes a full length panoramic sunroof. However, while the Terra and Luna get a temporary spare wheel, the Sol has just a puncture repair kit. I figure this is to compensate for the extra weight of the large sunroof.

Also watch out for the Toyota Touch. It is the first multi-media system in a B-Segment MPV. And Toyota Ireland says it will be rolled out across the range when new models are introduced. It is not available as an aftersales option fit.

The Verso-S has a great driving position and powers along well. One downside - in very stormy conditions on one of the drives, the higher Verso-S with the lighter modern body was not so enjoyable. Other than that, it proved a stylish and functional mini-MPV that gets the job done like all Toyotas. The company hopes to sell 200 this year, rising to 400 in 2011. And I bet they will.

Toyota has loaded up the Prius! The latest member of the Prius hybrid family is called the Prius+, and it will be Europe’s first seven-seat hybrid MPV when it goes on sale here early next year.

Taking the Prius hatchback as its base, Toyota has designed a bespoke MPV body from the ground up. Optimised aerodynamics mean a relatively low drag cooefficient of 0.29Cd, while design features include a panoramic sunroof, intricate tail-light clusters and sharp-edged bumpers.

On the inside, the Prius+ gets two seats up front, three independent, split-folding second row seats and a 50:50 split-folding third row.

The Prius+ uses the latest generation of Toyota’s Hybrid Synergy drivertrain, and includes lithium-ion batteries, instead of nickel metal hydride units for the first time in a non-plug-in hybrid Toyota. The smaller size of the batteries allows for more space inside.

The new Toyota Verso-S has been announced - and it may impress green car finance seekers.

Individuals keen to reduce their carbon footprint and become more eco-friendly might be particularly interested in the model as it delivers "the lowest CO2 emissions and best fuel economy in the mini-MPV segment".

This is due to its 1.33-litre VVT-i petrol engine and when matched with a six-speed transmission the vehicle is able to deliver 127 g/km of CO2 on the combined cycle, as well as achieve a fuel economy of 51.4 mpg.

The Toyota hybrids offensive is in full swing ever since the North American International Show (NAIAS), where the car maker presented the extended lineup based on the most successful hybrid in the world. For Europe, the car maker already announced the Yaris hybrid, and now comes back with a teaser of the Prius+, a seven seater MPV.

The manufacturer brags that this model will be the first in Europe to offer the seating capacity of an MPV and the benefits of a hybrid power train. The system, based on the Hybrid Synergy Drive featured for years in the Prius, will probably get a revamp for the new model.

The Prius+ promises to bring the lowest fuel consumption figure of any MPV currently on the market. In the Prius v minivan, presented by the car maker at NAIAS, on which the Prius+ is expected to be based, the system offered a choice between four driving modes: Normal, Power, Eco and EV.

According to Inside Line, the new Prius MPV will enter the market by 2012. The model is part of the world wide expansion of the Prius line announced by Toyota, which will see the car maker launch no less than 11 derivatives of the hybrid (a move which was long time coming, considering the decreasing interest of the consumers in the classic Prius.

The Toyota Prius was once the uncontested, bestselling hybrid in the American market but with the negative impact of Toyota’s recall and safety issues combined with the influx of new hybrid competition, the mighty Prius has become a face in the crowd – but perhaps that will change at the 2011 Detroit Auto Show.

Toyota will use the 2011 North American International Auto Show in Detroit to debut the new supersized Prius hybrid, offering a great deal more room than the current Prius along with an extra row of seating for more passengers. In addition to the extra space, the Toyota Prius MPV is expected to come with a more powerful hybrid system to help maintain the excellent fuel economy associated with the Prius name in the larger vehicle.

Can the 2012 Toyota Prius MPV give the company the hybrid edge?

For quite some time we were facing rumors that Toyota might launch an entire Prius-based brand but those rumors have faded with company execs denying this new brand (that would be similar to the Scion brand with very specific marketing). Toyota has offered nothing but a subtle teaser showing the Prius MPV tucked shyly behind the current production Prius but from the looks of things, we can expect a vehicle similar in size to the Mazda5.

THe Elgrand Versatile MPV

Versatile MPVs usually are the most popular imports from Japan because such vehicles aren't that readily available in the European car camp. The Toyota Alphard, for example, proved so popular in the grey market that it eventually caught the attention of Toyota Motor Thailand.

There are other Japanese brands that offer an alternative to the Alphard - now on sale officially in 2.4- and 3.5-litre forms - like the Honda Elysion, Mazda MPV and Nissan Elgrand - all dubbed full-sized MPVs with the ability to seat 7-8 people.

But the only model today that can really match the Alphard in terms of freshness is the Elgrand launched in Japan a few months ago. And you won't need to guess where this sample, driven by Motoring this week, comes from since Nissan Motor Thailand has yet to follow into Toyota's footsteps by starting sales of the Elgrand.

The key question is: should the Thai Nissan office sell the Elgrand? To cut the chase, the answer is definitely yes because if Toyota finds it feasible to sell the Alphard, then there should be no reason why Nissan shouldn't do likewise.

The Elgrand, after all, is a comfort-oriented people-carrier that well-off Thais like. It should even sell in higher numbers, as you might suspect, than the 370Z sports car that's officially sold by Thai Nissan.

Here are a couple of good reasons why the Elgrand looks cool against the Alphard, despite sharing so many similarities like a similarly conceived package, engine range, driving manners, specification and price.

Go into detail and you would note the Elgrand's marginally superior packaging. Against the Alphard, the Elgrand sits on a longer wheelbase length of three metres (50mm more) and is fractionally longer overall (65mm) and broader (20mm).

Such MPVs usually have more than enough headroom for passengers, so Nissan seemingly wasn't too bothered about the Elgrand's 75mm lower height. Such a thinking works in styling terms, for that gives the Elgrand a sturdier appearance than the Alphard's somehow clumsier proportions.

From the looks of things, the Prius MPV/crossover/mini-minivan thing will look exactly like, well, a Prius with a flatter, higher roof and an upright rear window. It appears to be sized somewhere between a Toyota Matrix and a Mazda 5, and to feature forward-hinged rear doors. Through the camouflage, it’s easy to see Prius-esque graphics on the front end and in the taillamps, as well as the Prius’s characteristic triangular D-pillar. The wheels are remarkably large for a Prius (the base sedan rides on puny 15-inchers); the rollers here are either 18s or really big–looking 17s. Inside, the MPV features center-mounted gauges like those in the regular Prius. Maximum seating capacity is unknown as of now, but squeezing in a third row, as Kia did on its diminutive Rondo, is a possibility.

Beneath the skin, expect to see the next generation of Toyota’s Hybrid Synergy Drive, although not necessarily one using pricey lithium-ion battery technology; the company has pledged to stick with nickel-metal hydride batteries for a long time to come. (As demand for plug-in hybrids increases, however, we expect Toyota could release a Prius MPV variant with the lithium-ion-powered setup from the plug-in Prius, which is due for the 2012 model year.) The MPV may, however, get a larger four-cylinder engine displacing 2.5 liters or so. Just how high Toyota can stretch this vehicle’s fuel economy remains to be seen, but hitting the sedan’s vaunted 50-mpg EPA combined mileage mark will be tough, given the MPV’s presumed weight gain, its taller profile, and the internal-combustion engine’s potential displacement increase.

The lithium-ion batteries used in the Alpha MPV are capable of higher power generation. The electric engine is also estimated to generate 81 horsepower with the combined output of both systems estimated to be at 135 horsepower. However, the vehicle’s fuel consumption could be slightly higher than the standard Prius due to its bigger size.

Eventhough the the Toyota/Daihatsu/Perodua is smaller than the Proton MPV, it will be a tough competitor to the Proton MPV with the clever utilization of the interior which makes the interior roomy and spacious then it looks.

The MPV will be powered by a 1.5 liter 3SZ-VE engine which will drive the front wheel.For the Perodua model, the engine to be used is yet to be confirmed.Most probably it will be powered by a 1.5 DVVT engine.Minor alteration will be done to the MPV as a Perodua MPV such as the shifter location which maybe would be changed to the most common position in Malaysia’s car, between the seats.

The TOYOTA PASSO SETTE/DAIHATSU BOON RUMINOUS will be introduced on Christmast (25 DEC 2008) and expected to be priced between 1.45-1.80 million yen (RM56,174-RM69,636)based on the current currency rates.

The price for the Perodua MPV is not confirmed yet.But the price should well under RM80k for it to compete with the upcoming Proton MPV and the current hot shot the Nissan Grand Livina and the other competitor such as the Naza Kia Rondo and the Cherry Eastar.

The new 2009 Toyota Verso continues the winning streak of its predecessor, taking the title of Best Small MPV at the Fleet World Honours awards for the third consecutive year.

Presented at the RAC Club in Pall Mall, Richard Balshaw, General Manager for Fleet collected the award and said, "To have retained this award for the third year running is very satisfying. The new Verso with Toyota Optimal Drive raises the quality level in the small MPV market. This is achieved with enhanced specification and safety features, plus improvements to the innovative Easy Flat-7 seating system."

Ken Rogers, Fleet World Editor said: "Based on the Auris platform, the new Verso benefits from Toyota's 'Optimal Drive' technology, a package of features which increased power output by up to 20 per cent, while at the same time achieving reductions in emissions and fuel economy of up to 12 per cent.

"Setting out to appeal to more than just the family audience, new Verso follows in the tyre-tracks of Corolla Verso in terms of seating/load-carrying versatility. And Verso is a full 7-seater. There is a clever fold-flat feature for all five rear seats which significantly boosts both convenience and load-lugging capability for bulky items.

"Important from the fleet perspective, the 2.0 D-4D 130 version hits the target for appropriate taxation/green credentials by keeping beneath the 160g/km Capital Allowance break-point."

SMART drivers definitely won’t need a high IQ to get the point of Toyota’s tiniest tot, the smallest of the company’s four newest models.

The IQ is similar to the Smart in so many ways and yet so much smarter where it matters; four(ish) seats to the Smart’s two, a better Euro NCAP safety rating and blessed with the cheeky Pokémon styling.

Admittedly it’s not going to give you hot-hatch style thrills along the country lanes of North Wales, but it’s still fun to drive, mainly because it’s so easy to hustle through town centre’s and because of how its engine sounds.

Toyota say it has a 1.0 litre petrol engine but – sounding like an F1 car when you push it and eerily quiet when you don’t – this particular powerplant is one which will delight most drivers.

Anyone who expects MPV levels of space is going to be disappointed, the boot is practically non-existent, and it’s not cheap in the way the Aygo, Toyota’s other baby offering, is.

But what it does do is answer age-old questions about how to fit four people into a very small amount of space very intelligently, and its styling is cool in a uniquely Japanese sort of way.

It’s not perfect but you can’t help loving it.
